This group from the University of La Rioja, Juan Félix San Juan, leads a project with the European Space Agency on the problem of space debris.
According to experts, in our Earth orbit, there is already more space junk than we have on Earth.
We will all remember the movie “Gravity”, where Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, where a piece of space debris hits the astronaut played by George and the problems it causes both him and the ship.
This affects the safety of satellites in orbit, which are responsible for issues as important as our telephone communications, the GPS that facilitate navigation in our vehicles, data services, etc.
The UR Scientific Computing Group (GRUCACI) uses HPC systems to carry out the calculations of the trajectories of these spatial residues. Sistemas Informáticos Europeos, has recently trained this group in the use of the cluster and its optimization, to obtain the best results.
