European Information Systems provider of Hyperion

European Information Systems won the Hyperion contest late last year. Hyperion is a cluster set up in the DIPC that seeks to create a Supercomputing Center in the Basque territory and become the second largest supercomputer in Spain.

  • Contest won!

European Information Systems won the competition for Hyperion at the end of last year. Hyperion is a cluster mounted on the DIPC which seeks to create a Supercomputing Center in the Basque territory and become the second largest supercomputer in Spain.

The old kindergarten where HYPERION stays

HYPERION will serve the entire research community in the Basque Country. It will be used to simulate the formation of galaxies, the behavior of new materials, in artificial intelligence, in computational chemistry. In addition to any computational needs that researchers in the Basque Country may have now and in the future.

Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC)

El DIPC (Donostia International Physics Center) was inaugurated in April 2000. Its objective is to promote scientific research in the field of basic and applied Physics in fields of interest to Basque society and international scientific development.

The elements of this award:
Six racks in emission neutral cluster

SIE installed six racks for the computing nodes of the supercomputer.

These racks have gas cooling, which is known as emission neutral cluster.

This technology offers two advantages: it neutralizes the heat at the hottest point (allowing for a PUE of 1,2) and avoids the need for a technical floor infrastructure for cooling, since these rear units can cool up to 30.000 W of consumption. per rack.

European Information Systems supplier of Hyperion.

Our company has been marketing this solution with great success since 2016, in dozens of projects such as the University of Barcelona, the IRB, the University of Alicante, the Juan Carlos I University of Madrid, etc.

Four new login and management servers

Four new login and management servers

In addition, four new login and management servers have been added for the access and management of the expansion and that centralize the services of the entire cluster.

This equipment has a redundant power supply, which guarantees its operation even if there is a failure in any of the sources.

The platforms are based on the solutions of GigaComputing, a Gigabyte group company. Each server is based on two 8362 Ghz Intel Icelake Platinum 2,8 processors with a total of 64 cores and PCI-E 4.0 architecture, allowing to connect Mellanox-NVIDIA MCX653106A-HDAT-SP cards with maximum performance.

Low latency

Low latency

For the low latency internal communications networks that will connect the future nodes to the existing supercomputer, the NVIDIA (formerly Mellanox) model MQM8790-HS2F 40-port 200 Gb/s switches have been chosen. They connect redundantly with the SPIN switches of the installation.

For the Ethernet solution, H3C model S9850-32H switches with L3 management level and redundant sources have been chosen, as well as their connection to the Center's trunk lines.

It has also been equipped with six D-LINK DGS-1210-52 gigabit SWITCHS, with L2+ management, for IPMI connectivity.

New nodes, better performance, new structure

more nodes

As for the new computing nodes, a total of 2240 Intel Platinum 8362 technology Cores are provided, which have 8 memory pipelines at 3200 Mhz per processor and communications bus. PCI-E 4.0 new generation.

New structure

It has been equipped with a common infrastructure at the server level, based on the Gigabyte R182-340 platform, fully GSM integrable and with full IPMI 3.3 (Redfish compatible) functionalities, which simplifies equipment management and deployment of images based on on Rocky Linux 8.7.

Better performance

In addition, all the disks installed in the system are PNY CS900, SSD disks with performance of 86.000 IOPS in reading and 81.000 IOPS in writing, which improves the performance of the system.

Donostia will inaugurate this year the second most powerful supercomputer in the State. DIPC is the center responsible for ensuring that the Basque Country is at the forefront of state supercomputing with the installation of this infrastructure that will be located in one of its buildings in the Gipuzkoan capital...
